Visualization and Data Analysis

The purpose of visualization is insight, not pretty pictures.

We are a group of diverse people with the aim to create better tools and algorithms for analyzing and displaying data.
Our roots can be found in areas such as computer graphics, image processing, and human-computer interaction, our current focus aligns well with the challenges presented by the field of data science.

The Visualization and Data Analysis group conducts research in the fields of Visualization, Computer Graphics, Image Processing, and Human-Computer Interaction. 

Our overall goal is to help users of various backgrounds gain insight into their data, with a focus on visual tools for data analysis. Here we typically have to overcome four challenges:

• Understanding the user
  Using methods of Human-Computer-Interaction and Psychology, we are studying the needs and workflows of scientists, physicians, business analysts and the general public, as well as the characteristics of the data they have to analyze.
• Mathematical modelling
  By applying methods from mathematics, statistics and signal processing, we are developing novel algorithms that help to derive models of real-world problems from the data and to find novel solutions.
• Visual design
  We develop innovative visual encoding and interaction tech- niques that will enable users to gain insight into and work more efficiently with their data.
• Tool development

Strong international collaborations not only foster our research but also underpin research-oriented teaching.
